Why do golfers wear polo shirts

Depending on whether you live in a warm or cool climate, the material you use will affect how you feel on the course. In cooler areas, cotton is always great while in warmer and more humid areas, a synthetic material will let sweat evaporate and keep you dry and cool.

All designed for maximum comfort with many designs, colors and patterns. Don't be like me and wear a thick cotton shirt in degree fahrenheit weather and end up lying on the shower floor eating dried mango and drinking the shower water! The first lesson I learned playing in a hot country, was to NEVER wear chinos and a cotton polo - your head feels like it's going to explode!

Depending on your preference, you can choose between shorts and slacks. Keep in mind, they need belt loops. No drawstring or soccer shorts. You can also get shorts and slacks made specifically for hot weather or temperate weather like the shirts above. For hot and humid conditions, I love Under Armour for slacks ; Adidas for shorts. For when I travel to cooler more temperate places, I like flat-front chinos and chino shorts. The safest colors for your golfing pants and shorts are cream, beige, khaki, gray and tan.

White and pink as well as very bright colors are something you graduate into as you move up the golf hierarchy and establish yourself as a flashy snappy dresser. If you wear white trousers and your handicap is not below 3, you will be ridiculed. I promise, just trust me on this one! Be the grey man and stick to the safe shorts colors for now. You get three kinds of golf shoes now. Soft spikes - Steel spikes are replaced with plastic and rubber ones to avoid tearing up greens - these are the most popular type of shoe 3.

Spikeless - The sole of the shoe has lots of small rubber studs that are great for people who get stud pressure walking on spiked golf shoes. I played with soft spike golf shoes for 14 years but as someone who suffers from serious stud pressure playing any sport, I ditched them for spikeless as soon as spikeless became a 'thing'.

Just 18 holes killed my feet in soft spikes - the soles are often very hard and only get softer as you spend more and more money on them. Adidas and Skechers as well as Footjoy make some of the most comfortable spikeless golf shoes around.

After 18 holes in massive heat, I'm usually sitting in the club house sipping my beer, feeling fantastic! The soles are softer as well as having ample padding in the heel and quarter sections - like wearing trainers.

While spikeless golf shoes are more comfortable, they look more casual and like sneakers so you won't look like your favorite pro unless Freddie Couples or Ernie Els are your favorite. If you want to look like Jordan Spieth or Dustin Johnson, you'll need to get some soft spike golf shoes like the ones below. Use your belt loops! Wear a belt. It can be whatever looks good but I prefer something stretchy and less formal than belts you wear at work. I like them to match my shorts or a color on the shoes.

Something cheap too - like an elasticated braided belt. When it comes to socks, you want to get white socks like these Nike ones that go up near your ankles. Skip to content Skip to navigation.

What's appropriate to wear: Shirt: A golf shirt is perfect. You know the kind—a pullover shirt with a collar and short sleeves. Usually, golf shirts will be a little longer than an ordinary polo shirt, to help them stay tucked in even after repeatedly swinging at the ball.

Avoid loud, splashy patterns. Keeping your look understated will keep the focus on you rather than on your clothing. Pants, Skirts, Skorts, and Culottes: Pants always will do very nicely—linen, khaki, cotton, or, in cold weather, wool. Unless you know they're acceptable, avoid jeans.

For women, capri pants, a skirt, a skort shorts made to look like a skirt by having a panel across the front and back , or culottes also work nicely. Shorts: Bermuda-length shorts particularly are appropriate virtually everywhere these days, especially in warm weather. Socks with shorts — wear socks, usually white, that go up to just below your ankle — i. Beware some courses very few thankfully! Shoes — Soft spike or spikeless golf shoes are best. If you do not have golf shoes a smart pair of sneakers or trainers will do but double-check with the course first.

No flip flops, thongs or sandals. Avoid steel spike golf shoes. It is unlikely many golf courses will allow them due to the damage they do to greens but they can also be sore to wear after lots of walking. Avoid work shoes with a heel as it can make an impression on the green and cause a mark that could throw a putt off-line. Headwear Baseball caps , visors and even cowboy or straw hats are all acceptable. No backwards caps Avoid sombreros or large hats.

They will not help you swing very well! Extras 1. Golf gloves — these are not required but golfers can find these help them grip the club better. Right-handed players wear gloves on the left hand and left-handed players wear gloves on the right hand. Jewellery — wear tighter fitting, comfortable and durable jewellery. Bracelets, necklases or watches can all be worn but avoid expensive pieces as they can get damaged as you play.

And last but not least a golf bag. It is unlikely a golf course will allow you to carry a few clubs in your hand. Avoid large and very noticeable jewellery. Do not wear large necklace chains outside your polo shirt for example. Sleeved or sleeveless blouses with collars. A vest, sweater, light jacket or wind shirt are all options if more layers are needed No T-shirts, halters, tank tops or sports jerseys. No backwards caps Avoid large hats. Bracelets, necklaces or watches can all be worn. Avoid large, very noticeable and expensive jewellery as they can inhibit your swing or get damaged as you play. Comfortable, Weather Appropriate, Golf Clothes Are Best While you may think the most important thing is to keep up with the latest golfing fashion the key, in reality, is that it is most important that you feel comfortable on the golf course.

Like golf club design, golf clothes have developed hugely over the last 20 years or so. What to Wear Away From the Golf Course One of the frustrating things I find about golf is that there in addition to the rules there are what you wear on the golf course there can then be yet more rules for what you should wear off the course.

So it can be important to check what you can wear off the course too before you arrive. And that goes too for any practice in the comfort of your own home! One thing to bear in mind though if you do want to make a fashion statement on the golf course. Go Spikeless!
